There was a growing crowd at the tunnel entrance and atop the tunnel — on the bridge — an ambulance and a police car with its bubble light awhirl. Already! Cops in New York City don’t waste any time.

I pressed forward on Deadly, and the crowd parted for us. I could hear people speculating about what had happened.

“Guy got killed by some damn kids in the tunnel,” was one theory.

“Horse trampled a guy,” was another.

“This girl here musta trampled him,” was a third.

“Yeah, dude, here she is. She the one.” This last came from one of the kids who had been in the tunnel. He was laughing like crazy, because he knew I hadn’t done a thing.

His friends liked this idea. “Hey, officer,” another of his chums yelled. “Ask this white girl here what happened.”

Well, in a way he was right. I had gone into the tunnel to thwart Sellers, hadn’t I?

“Hey, officer, talk to her.” The kids were practically chanting it now.

I saw an officer’s hat come to attention. Then I saw an officer’s hat moving in my direction. And I took the coward’s way out. Which is to say that I dismounted so that I wouldn’t be sticking up in the air above the crowd the way you do when you’re on horseback, and I tried, as well as a woman leading a horse could, to blend into the throng.

I have to say that my strategy also involved moving in the opposite direction, though at a pace that wouldn’t in and of itself attract attention.

Impossible, you say?

I’d have thought so, too, except that when I heard the siren that had to have been the ambulance moving away with poor Sellers, I was nearly at Central Park West.

Where, I might add, Lars stood at the curb, patiently grazing.
